Charred Marvels 04
This vase was created from beech wood that I first sanded for a long time, layer by layer, until it took on a rounded, soft shape. Then came the fire. I charred it with the shou sugi ban method allowing the flame to enter the structure of the wood, to draw out the grain, mark the cracks, and leave a deep, almost velvety shade of black. And then, a long moment spent with the brush. Gently, but thoroughly, until the charred layers gave way to the true surface: smooth, clean, ready to be touched. It doesn’t stain the hands, though it looks as if it might. Inside, there is space for a few dried grasses - a quiet object, where fire meets patience.
Dimensions: 13 cm x 11 cm x 5 cm
All cracks and imperfections visible on the vases are their unique feature, characteristic of the natural material that is wood.
